Photographs from the Philadelphia Record concerning the riots at Eastern State Penitentiary in September and November 1933. (1) recto and (2) verso of "Engine Company No. 13 of 15th and Parrish sts., entering the big main gate of the Eastern Penitentiary to fight fires inside started by rioting prisoners yesterday afternoon, and to aid the prison guards by turning streams on the rioters." (3) recto and (4) verso of "State police are shown marching out of the central watch tower yesterday after the rioting convicts were subdued. Captain Herbert Smith (in the light suit), the warden; Dr. Guy Holcombe, vice president of the prison board of trustees, and Captain Thomas F. Martin, commandant of State police school at Hershey, are leading the troopers." (5) recto and (6) verso of "The large photo shows a detail of City Hall detectives arriving at the massive gates of Eastern Penitentiary with machine guns and tear gas bombs to aid in putting down last night's revolt." (7) recto and (8) verso of "Valuable machinery was smashed when enraged convicts rioted in the Eastern Penitentiary Tuesday afternoon. The broken apparatus in the weaving shop is shown above. 'Hard-boiled Herbie' Smith (inset), the warden, commenting on the third major disturbance to rock the institution since September, yesterday said 'everything is under control.'"
